2020 was a big year. It's safe to say, it was not the year anyone expected.
Big Edition launched in October with the mission of covering the biggest trends and topics in entertainment, style, fashion and culture. We're just getting started and are looking forward to more big stories in the new year.
Here are 10 big stories from Big Edition's first year:
1. What Would History’s Rulers Look Like as Modern People?
What would it be like to pass an Egyptian Pharaoh from thousands of years ago on the sidewalk today if he was on his way to a business meeting downtown? Artist Becca Saladin has an answer for you. He looks pretty much like the guy who just got on the bus behind you.
A Texas-based graphic designer, Saladin offers a modern take on dozens of history’s most powerful people in her portrait series, “Royalty Now.” The following portraits imagine some of history's royalty in modern guise. Can you still spot their power?
2. The Meanings and Stories Behind 50 Pop Songs
From rock and pop to country and rap, we dive into the meanings and backstories of song lyrics spanning the 1940s to the present.
Ever wondered what Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” is really about? Or who is the real-life “Becky with the good hair”? The answers, my friend, will make you hear these tunes with new ears.

4. 50 Best Movie Quotes of All Time
You’ll recognize these lines from famous movies — but do you remember who said them? “Here’s looking at you, kid.” “There’s no place like home.” “Show me the money!”
Movie history is full of incredible one-liners that make us laugh or cry, or at the very least take us on a nostalgia trip. We all have our favorite movie quote — here are 50 of the best.
5. 50 Most Romantic Movie Couples of All Time
You can’t beat a great movie love story – you know, the type that puts butterflies in your belly. These best romantic movie couples can thaw the coldest of hearts and turn anyone into a believer.
Some of these iconic on-screen partnerships get their happily-ever-after, some don’t. But they all deserve a place on our list of favorite romantic movie couples.
6. Rolling Stone’s Top 50 Albums of All Time
Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time has long been a matter of hot debate. That’s no surprise — it’s one of many such lists, and music tastes are personal.
But the Rolling Stone list, first published in 2003 and last updated in September 2020, is based on feedback from more than 300 artists, producers, critics, and music-industry figures. You still might not agree with the top 50 rankings, of course. Have a look and make your own mind up.
7. Top 50 Tallest Actresses
While being tall isn’t a requirement to be an actress, many high profile TV and movie actresses do tend to be much taller than the average American woman (5’4”). These days, many actresses measure in close to — and over — six feet.
While you would expect to find statuesque women such as Sigourney Weaver, Saffron Burrows or Alison Janney, other actresses, including highly successful ones, seem tall on screen — think Jennifer Lawrence (5’9”) Charlize Theron (5’8”) or Cameron Diaz (5’7”) — but didn’t make our list. (They just seem taller in those long camera angles.)
8. Top 50 Shortest Actors
Gone are the days in Hollywood when actresses wore ballet flats, stood on lower steps or in ditches, or slouched, to hide the fact that they were taller than the leading man. Stars like Alan Ladd (who was 5’6”), a leading actor in the 1940s, would often stand on a box to appear taller, and Humphrey Bogart’s (who was 5’8”) female co-stars had to hunch down when seated so they looked shorter.
These days, the average American male is 5’9” tall. Tom Cruise, one of the highest-paid and most popular stars in Hollywood, comes in at just 5’7”, two inches shorter than the average. Actors such as Peter Dinklage, of “Game of Thrones” fame, are even famous for playing shorter characters, or have roles written for them, as the title role in “Willow” was for Warwick Davis.
9. 50 Most Fashionable Celebrities
Whether you scan the red carpet for the latest in celebrity trends or you prefer to get your style inspiration from Instagram these days, there’s no denying the influence our favorite actresses and musicians have on seasonal style and fashion trends.
Here, we’ve rounded up a list of 50 of the most fashionable celebrities. From elegant French actresses to California-cool runway models, these celebrities have some of the most covetable styles on the red carpet (and on Instagram) at the moment.
10. The Most Famous Cars in the History of TV
The relationship between television and the automobile is as twisted and dramatic as a script from one of Aaron Spelling’s many hit shows.
There’s a vast subculture devoted to TV cars, with online forums and public events often drawing more fans than the actual stars of the long-shuttered shows. Consider this collection a kaleidoscope of Americana.
In the words of the classic TV cliche: “Follow that car!”
